Laurel Elementary Magnet School

Laurel Elementary Magnet School of Innovation and Career Exploration is a unique learning environment located in Brea Olinda Unified School District. As a magnet school, teaching and learning are focused around the theme of Innovation and Career Exploration.

All of Laurel's teaching staff are highly trained in the areas of Project Based Learning (PBL), STEM and the Next Generation Science Standards, and effective technology integration for teaching as well as student output. Classrooms are outfitted with 75 inch LED displays, teacher tools that allow for frequent movement and wireless presentation, microphone sound systems, and 1:1 technology for every student from grades TK through 6. Classrooms are also outfitted with additional iPads and Chromebooks so that students can learn to be creators of their own content and multi-lingual in terms of digital knowledge. The learning environment is flexible and all classrooms include flexible seating options for students that include standing desks, soft seating, core support seating, and learning stations that are portable.

The core curriculum is taught with innovative teaching in mind. Students do not just sit and get in the classroom. There are embedded opportunities for flipped learning and digital learning in every classroom. Additionally, all students have multiple opportunities to engage in hands on learning through our school wide Makerspace and Innovation Lab. Teachers work in collaboration with the site Teacher on Special Assignment to plan lessons aligned to NGSS standards as well as connect to the second portion of our magnet school theme of Career Exploration.

Career Exploration
One of the most unique aspects of the school are the community partnerships that are built in every classroom and every grade. Each classroom is partnered with a local business so that students can learn and explore careers and engage in hands-on problem solving with the partner. Partners include the Brea Fire Department, Brea Police Department, local eateries, veterinarian offices, hotels, trash and waste companies, air conditioning, and local landscapers. These partners work hand in hand with the teacher and present industry problems to our students for them to solve. They work collaboratively over the course of the year to coach and inspire students to learn new technology skills that apply to the industry as well as explore the various ways to apply their in school learning in the real world environment. Career exploration does not stop here. With each week’s Makerspace lab lesson, students also get glimpse into the various careers that use the skills they are learning. Some examples are engineer, publicist, architect, video game designer, chef, video production designer, etc.
