BOUSD to Launch Extended-Day TK and Kindergarten Programs in 2024-25 School Year

April 22, 2024

Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) is pleased to begin offering extended-day Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten programs next school year. The current TK and Kindergarten programs will be expanded from half-day programs to an extended-day schedule and will be available district-wide.

“Expanding our Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten to a full-day program underscores our commitment to early education. This program enhancement will provide our youngest learners with greater opportunities to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a nurturing environment that is in line with our BOUSD traditions,” said Superintendent Brinda Leon.

Research has shown that students who attend extended-day or full-day kindergarten programs have higher academic achievement, improvements in school attendance, and increased school readiness. The programs also support literacy and language development and have positive social and emotional benefits.

The extended-day program meets the District’s 2023-24 Board Goal 4.3 to explore full-day Kindergarten opportunities and will help recruit and retain new families who desire extended and/or full-day TK or Kindergarten program opportunities.

The District will be working with teachers and families to support the change from half-day to extended-day TK and Kindergarten programs. Families who have already enrolled in one of the half-day programs will be notified of the change and supported through a series of communications and information from the school site. The Child Development Services Department will also be working with families to support questions surrounding before and after-school care.

The District will also host two TK/Kindergarten Parent Information Meetings on April 29 at 9 - 10 a.m. and April 30 at 6 - 7 p.m. at the Brea Civic Center in Community Rooms A and B.  Interested families may sign up to attend one of the meetings by completing this Google form.

In the meantime, anyone with questions may contact BOUSD Educational Services at 714-990-7533.
