In 2019, Senate Bill 328 was signed into law in response to research indicating that earlier start times for students in middle and high schools could lead to sleep deprivation with the side effects of that condition being decreases in student mental and physical health, and a reduction in academic performance. This law, which takes effect for the 2022-23 school year, requires California middle schools to start no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. This law will affect both Brea Olinda High School and Brea Canyon High School start times. Brea Junior High has a current start time of 8:15 a.m. and will not be impacted.
As a result of this law and the impact it has on our high schools, a decision has also been made to adjust the start time of Country Hills Elementary to 8:45 a.m. in order to alleviate potential traffic issues on Associated Road (a popular thoroughfare for students and families to get to our high schools) and to accommodate bus schedules so that all students using BOUSD buses can have their transportation needs met.
Below is a letter containing all the information regarding the new start times, as well as the new bell schedules for Country Hills Elementary, Brea Olinda High School and Brea Canyon High School.
