The Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) is thrilled to announce the expansion of its dual enrollment partnership with Fullerton College to offer an innovative opportunity for students at Brea Olinda High School (BOHS). Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, students will have the chance to enroll in a cutting-edge Uncrewed Aerial Systems Piloting Certificate Program, equipping them with essential skills and credentials for careers in the rapidly growing drone technology industry.
This collaboration builds upon BOUSD’s commitment to providing career-forward educational pathways that prepare students for in-demand professions. The new program will allow 11th and 12th grade BOHS students to earn up to 12 units of college credit while gaining hands-on experience in drone operations, regulations, safety, and applications in industries such as cinematography, real estate, public safety, and engineering.
“We are excited to expand our partnership with Fullerton College and provide our students with unique learning opportunities that give them a competitive edge in the job market,” said Superintendent Brinda Leon. “This Drone Certificate Program is an excellent addition to other dual enrollment options and an example of how we are preparing students for the future by blending technology, innovation, and practical skills.”
Through the drone certificate program, students will have access to college-level instruction and resources. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a certificate in Uncrewed Aerial Systems Piloting, positioning them for potential FAA Part 107 certification, which is required for commercial drone operation.
“This is a transformational moment for STEM education and workforce development in Orange County,” said Jay Seidel, professor and director of the Fullerton College Drone Technology Department. “By starting early and providing access for students through high school and college, we’re giving Brea students a direct and supported path into high-demand careers in drone and autonomous technologies.”
What’s even more exciting is that last year, Fullerton College announced that they had become the first community college on the west coast to offer a bachelor of science program in drone and autonomous systems.
With a variety of options available to high school students, BOUSD also hopes to further expand the partnership by introducing career exploration opportunities in drone technology to elementary and junior high school students.
“With early career exploration of drone technology at our K-8 schools and the drone piloting certificate program at BOHS, we believe our students could be on a path to earning a certificate and bachelor’s degree by the time they complete high school,” added Leon.
This summer, BOHS in partnership with Fullerton College, offered dual enrollment courses in Biology, Communications and Music. The fall semester will also provide high school students with the opportunity to take college courses in English, Administration of Justice, and Ethnic Studies.
Students and parents interested in learning more about the drone certificate program or any other dual enrollment options are encouraged to contact BOHS Counseling at 714-990-7850 or visit the BOHS Dual Enrollment website.
