Career Exploration Meets Creativity at Laurel Elementary’s Recycled Fashion Show

Laurel Elementary Magnet School’s creativity was on full display at the 4th Annual Recycled Fashion Show, held Saturday, January 24 — an event that continues to grow in imagination and heart each year.

Led by Magnet Coordinator and Instructional Coach Kimberly Thorsen, the show reflects Laurel’s magnet focus on careers along with John Holland’s RIASEC themes, spotlighting both Realistic (R) and Artistic (A) learners.

Families teamed up for hands-on building and bold design, transforming everyday recyclables into runway-ready fashion. This year’s creations included a puffer vest made from Amazon packaging, along with dresses and outfits crafted from coffee filters, newspaper clippings, trash bags, plastic and cardboard materials and other everyday items.

More than a fashion show, this event celebrates innovation, collaboration, and confidence.

“This is such a fun event because it allows families to create together and then watch their children shine in the spotlight. Families that learn together create the habits of lifelong learners, which is a goal of ours at Laurel Elementary Magnet,” said Thorsen.

Families worked together to design their pieces and write a short script, read aloud during the event, as each model strutted down the runway. Guests enjoyed sparkling cider and light refreshments while cheering on the designers.

To help celebrate the creative talent of participants, every student was recognized with a custom 3D-printed award and unique fashion jewelry, making the experience both memorable and meaningful.

The event also supported the broader community. Attendees brought canned food donations, which will be added to Brea Canyon High School’s food pantry, helping families in need.

Blending creativity, career exploration, and community care, Laurel’s Recycled Fashion Show continues to be a stand-out example of learning brought to life — one recycled masterpiece at a time.
