We are proud to honor Mrs. Courtney Collins of Laurel Elementary Magnet School as the 2026 Brea Olinda Unified School District Teacher of the Year!
Collins was surprised with the announcement on Feb. 19 in her 3rd grade classroom, with her students and family present to share in the special moment.
During the announcement Superintendent Brinda Leon shared sentiments from Laurel Principal Erika Lopez's nomination:
"Mrs. Collins is the kind of educator whose presence brings warmth, purpose, and heart to our school community. A true gem, her nurturing spirit is felt by students, families, and colleagues alike. She has an extraordinary ability to see the potential in every child, ensuring each student feels valued, safe, and deeply cared for. In her classroom, learning is engaging, joyful, and meaningful. Mrs. Collins inspires students to grow academically while building confidence and a genuine love for learning. She is especially committed to supporting English Learners, skillfully developing their language abilities while honoring who they are and celebrating their strengths. Through patience, expertise, and constant encouragement, she empowers students to believe in themselves and take risks."
Collins consistently goes above and beyond, creating an inclusive environment where every student feels welcomed and supported. Her leadership, expertise, and collaborative spirit extend well beyond her classroom, strengthening the entire school community. Because of her, students come to school feeling happy, included, and excited to learn each day.
The District’s Teacher of the Year is selected following nominations for Teacher of the Year at each school site across BOUSD. Collins was among nine teachers across the district who were recognized for demonstrating excellence in their commitment to students, colleagues, and the District.
This year’s site-level Teachers of the Year included: Ashley Cooper of Arovista Elementary, Shinobu Hirota of Country Hills Elementary, Kristi Rivera of Falcon Academy, John Konrad at Mariposa Elementary, James Kessel at Olinda Elementary, Paul Rivera at Brea Junior High, LaKisha Ozan at Brea Olinda High School, and Robert Verry at Brea Canyon High. Collins will advance to be considered for county-wide recognition in 2027.
We are thrilled to celebrate Mrs. Courtney Collins and the extraordinary difference she makes in the lives of BOUSD students.
