During the March 5, 2026 Board of Education meeting, the Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) Board adopted Resolution #26-04, declaring the Trustee Area 4 seat vacant pursuant to California Education Code 5090.
The vacancy follows the absence of Board Member Christopher Becerra for three consecutive months, and who previously represented Trustee Area 4. Click here to view boundaries of Trustee Area 4.
Under California law, when a vacancy occurs on a school district governing board, the remaining members of the Board of Trustees have two options to fill the position:
- Provisional Appointment: The Board may appoint a qualified individual to fill the vacancy. If this option is selected, the appointee will serve until the next regularly scheduled election for that seat.
- Special Election: The Board may call for a special election, allowing voters within Trustee Area 4 to elect a new board member, which would be a cost to the District.
The Board has 60 days from the date of the vacancy to fill the vacancy. During tonight’s meeting, the Board gave direction to the Superintendent to proceed with the process of a Provisional Appointment.
At the upcoming Board meeting on March 19, 2026, the District will share information with the public about the application process, eligibility requirements, and timeline with the community.
The Board of Trustees remains committed to transparency throughout this process and will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.
We appreciate the continued support of our families, staff, and community as we work together to serve the students of Brea Olinda Unified School District.
