Joseph Covey was elected to the Brea Olinda School Board in November 2024. He has been actively
involved with the City of Brea through serving as a community leader in a variety of roles. In 2018,
he was appointed to the Commission for Parks, Recreation and Human Services ensuring the safety
of our various parks in the City of Brea. He worked to push forward the modernization of Arovista
Park, and from there he made the jump to Planning Commission in 2022. While serving as
commissioner, he learned the importance of upholding the core values of Brea’s General Plan and
how future developments would impact the community and environment. He gained knowledge in
city governance as a member of the League of Cities and worked alongside fellow commissioners to
ensure compliance with Brea’s zoning regulations and general plan for development. Other roles
have included being an Advisory Member of Art in Public Places and a part of the Brea Country
Fair Steering Committee, where he has hosted the event the last few years.

As a past member of the Brea Rotary Club, he has served in a variety of roles including Director of
Community Services, the Rotary Youth Program and President. One of his favorite activities from
Rotary was participating in History Day Brea, where he rode the bus as a docent for the elementary
schools telling the tales of Brea’s past. For his leadership and community efforts, he was recognized
as Rotarian of the Year for 2021/2022. The Brea Chamber of Commerce also recognized Joseph as
Citizen of the Year in 2018 for his outstanding contributions to the community.

Joseph is married and has lived in Brea since 1997 with his husband Kevin. As parents, their twin
boys Austin and Dakota are products of the education of BOUSD, having attended Mariposa, Brea
Junior High and Brea Olinda High School. He has spent many years working alongside teachers,
parents, and students in the Brea Olinda School District. His roles have included serving as Room
Dad, Safety Site Council, Jog-A-Thon Chair, and PTA President for Mariposa Elementary, Brea
Junior High and Brea Olinda High School. He also served on the Brea Education Foundation’s
board to help raise funds to benefit the students of BOUSD.

As a graduate of California State University, Fullerton, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in
Theater Arts Education with a minor in Theater Management. He also earned an Associate of Arts
degree in Liberal Arts Studies at Fullerton College. He has spent his career working in the hospitality
industry as manager in Entertainment Operations.
Joseph brings to BOUSD vast leadership experience from city governance, community volunteering,
operations and a passion for education for students. He is thrilled to serve on the board and excited
to work alongside the BOUSD staff, teachers, parents, students and community members of the
City of Brea.
